Handwriting Practice

Kindergarten is where the foundation of your child's handwriting will begin. It is important to partner with the classroom and reinforce the skills we practice in class so that your child can enjoy writing and become fluent.

See the resources section below to find practice handwriting sheets that you can print out for your child at home!

Please remember: Always start your letters and numbers at the TOP!

Letter Names and Sounds

Your child will be taught all the letters the first month of school. We will focus on both the name of the letter and the phonetic sound it makes. We learn through movement and each letter has it's own "motion" which helps students easily recall and connect to the sound. Zoo Phonics is an excellent program that we use in NExA kindergarten and below is a link to the flash cards we use in class that are animated and include the name and sound of each letter. Your child also have a movement that goes with each letter sound!

Math Strategies

Students will experience math in a lot of different ways! At NExA we believe in hands-on experimental math opportunities. Students will first explore mathematical concepts and then they will become concrete through direct instruction and group inquiry.

Below you can follow the link to a few games and activities you can use at home to encourage math exploration.

Sight Words

Kindergartners are expected to be able to fluently (within 3 seconds) identify 50 sight words by the end of the school year. At NExA we use the Fry Sight Word List. The words on this list are the words your child will come across most frequently in his or her reading. NExA kindergarten scholars will learn the first 50 words on the list as well as a selection of others from the second 50 that are used frequently in their writing as well.
